6 For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and
the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor,[b] Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
7 Of the increase of his
government and peace
there will be no end.
He will reign on David's throne
and
over his kingdom,
establishing and upholding it
with justice and righteousness
from
that time on and forever.
The zeal of the LORD Almighty
will accomplish this. (Isaiah
9)
1 "All this I have told you so that you will not go
astray. 2 They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think
he is offering a service to God. 3 They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me. 4
I have told you this, so that when the time comes you will remember that I warned you. I did not tell you this at first because
I was with you. 5 "Now I am going to him who sent me, yet none of you asks me, ‘Where are
you going?' 6 Because I have said these things, you are filled with grief. 7 But I tell you the
truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will
send him to you. 8 When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt[a] in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me;
10 in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; 11
and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.
12
"I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he
will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is
yet to come. 14 He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you. 15
All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you.
(John 16)
1 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all
together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole
house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on
each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues[a] as the Spirit enabled them.
5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing
Jews from every nation under heaven. 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because
each one heard them speaking in his own language. 7 Utterly amazed, they asked: "Are not all these men who
are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own native language? 9 Parthians,
Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia,
Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and
Arabs-we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!" 12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one
another, "What does this mean?"
13 Some, however, made fun of them
and said, "They have had too much wine.[b]"
14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed
the crowd: "Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I
say. 15 These men are not drunk, as you suppose. It's only nine in the morning! 16 No, this is what
was spoken by the prophet Joel:
17 "‘In the last days, God says,
I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your
young men will see visions,
your old men will dream dreams.
18 Even on my servants,
both men and women,
I will pour out my Spirit in those days,
and they will
prophesy.
19 I will show wonders in the heaven above
and signs on the earth below,
blood and fire and billows of smoke.
20 The sun will be turned to darkness
and
the moon to blood
before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.
21
And everyone who calls
on the name of the Lord will be saved.'[c]
22 "Men of Israel, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man
accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know. 23
This man was handed over to you by God's set purpose and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men,[d] put him to death by nailing him to the cross. 24 But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the
agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him. 25 David said about him:
"‘I saw the Lord always before me.
Because he is at my right
hand,
I will not be shaken.
26 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices;
my body also will live in hope,
27 because you will not abandon me to the grave,
nor will you let your Holy One see decay.
28 You have made known to me the paths
of life;
you will fill me with joy in your presence.'[e]
29 "Brothers, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David
died and was buried, and his tomb is here to this day. 30 But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him
on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne. 31 Seeing what was ahead, he spoke of the resurrection
of the Christ,[f] that he was not abandoned to the grave, nor did his body see decay. 32 God has raised this Jesus to life,
and we are all witnesses of the fact. 33 Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the
promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear. 34 For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet
he said,
"‘The Lord said to my Lord:
"Sit
at my right hand
35 until I make your enemies
a footstool for your feet."'[g]
36 "Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this
Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ."
37 When the people heard
this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?"
38 Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for
the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your
children and for all who are far off-for all whom the Lord our God will call."
40
With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, "Save yourselves from this corrupt generation."
41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.
42 They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship,
to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs
were done by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 Selling
their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in
the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God
and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.
(Acts 2)
1 Now a man named Ananias,
together with his wife Sapphira, also sold a piece of property. 2 With his wife's full knowledge he kept back
part of the money for himself, but brought the rest and put it at the apostles' feet.
3
Then Peter said, "Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have
kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land? 4 Didn't it belong to you before it was sold?
And after it was sold, wasn't the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied
to men but to God."
5 When Ananias heard this, he fell down and died. And
great fear seized all who heard what had happened. 6 Then the young men came forward, wrapped up his body, and
carried him out and buried him.
7 About three hours later his wife came in,
not knowing what had happened. 8 Peter asked her, "Tell me, is this the price you and Ananias got for the
land?"
"Yes," she said, "that is the price."
9 Peter said to her, "How could you agree to test the Spirit of the Lord? Look! The feet of
the men who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out also."
10
At that moment she fell down at his feet and died. Then the young men came in and, finding her dead, carried her out and buried
her beside her husband. 11 Great fear seized the whole church and all who heard about these events.
12 The apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders among the people. And all the believers
used to meet together in Solomon's Colonnade. 13 No one else dared join them, even though they were highly
regarded by the people. 14 Nevertheless, more and more men and women believed in the Lord and were added to their
number. 15 As a result, people brought the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and mats so that at least
Peter's shadow might fall on some of them as he passed by. 16 Crowds gathered also from the towns around Jerusalem,
bringing their sick and those tormented by evil[a] spirits, and all of them were healed.
17 Then the high priest and all
his associates, who were members of the party of the Sadducees, were filled with jealousy. 18 They arrested the
apostles and put them in the public jail. 19 But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the doors of the
jail and brought them out. 20 "Go, stand in the temple courts," he said, "and tell the people the
full message of this new life."
21 At daybreak they entered the temple
courts, as they had been told, and began to teach the people.
When the high
priest and his associates arrived, they called together the Sanhedrin-the full assembly of the elders of Israel-and sent to
the jail for the apostles. 22 But on arriving at the jail, the officers did not find them there. So they went back
and reported, 23 "We found the jail securely locked, with the guards standing at the doors; but when we opened
them, we found no one inside." 24 On hearing this report, the captain of the temple guard and the chief priests
were puzzled, wondering what would come of this.
25 Then someone came and said,
"Look! The men you put in jail are standing in the temple courts teaching the people." 26 At that, the
captain went with his officers and brought the apostles. They did not use force, because they feared that the people would
stone them.
27 Having brought the apostles, they made them appear before the
Sanhedrin to be questioned by the high priest. 28 "We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name,"
he said. "Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are determined to make us guilty of this man's blood."
29 Peter and the other apostles replied: "We must obey God rather than
men! 30 The God of our fathers raised Jesus from the dead-whom you had killed by hanging him on a tree. 31
God exalted him to his own right hand as Prince and Savior that he might give repentance and forgiveness of sins to Israel.
32 We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him."
33 When they heard this, they were furious and wanted to put them to death.
34 But a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law, who was honored by all the people, stood up in the Sanhedrin
and ordered that the men be put outside for a little while. 35 Then he addressed them: "Men of Israel, consider
carefully what you intend to do to these men. 36 Some time ago Theudas appeared, claiming to be somebody, and about
four hundred men rallied to him. He was killed, all his followers were dispersed, and it all came to nothing. 37
After him, Judas the Galilean appeared in the days of the census and led a band of people in revolt. He too was killed, and
all his followers were scattered. 38 Therefore, in the present case I advise you: Leave these men alone! Let them
go! For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail. 39 But if it is from God, you will not be
able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God."
40 His speech persuaded
them. They called the apostles in and had them flogged. Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let
them go.
41 The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted
worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name. 42 Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they
never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Christ.[b] (Acts 5)
1 In the church
at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen (who had been brought
up with Herod the tetrarch) and Saul. 2 While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said,
"Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them." 3 So after they had fasted
and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off.
4 The two of
them, sent on their way by the Holy Spirit, went down to Seleucia and sailed from there to Cyprus. 5 When they
arrived at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God in the Jewish synagogues. John was with them as their helper.
6 They traveled through the whole island until they came to Paphos. There they met a Jewish sorcerer
and false prophet named Bar-Jesus, 7 who was an attendant of the proconsul, Sergius Paulus. The proconsul, an intelligent
man, sent for Barnabas and Saul because he wanted to hear the word of God. 8 But Elymas the sorcerer (for that
is what his name means) opposed them and tried to turn the proconsul from the faith. 9 Then Saul, who was also
called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked straight at Elymas and said, 10 "You are a child of the devil
and an enemy of everything that is right! You are full of all kinds of deceit and trickery. Will you never stop perverting
the right ways of the Lord? 11 Now the hand of the Lord is against you. You are going to be blind, and for a time
you will be unable to see the light of the sun."
Immediately mist and
darkness came over him, and he groped about, seeking someone to lead him by the hand. 12 When the proconsul saw
what had happened, he believed, for he was amazed at the teaching about the Lord. (Acts 13)
10 You, however, know all about my teaching, my way of life,
my purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance, 11 persecutions, sufferings-what kinds of things happened to me in
Antioch, Iconium and Lystra, the persecutions I endured. Yet the Lord rescued me from all of them. 12 In fact,
everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, 13 while evil men and impostors will
go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. 14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have
become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, 15 and how from infancy you have known the
holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture
is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the
man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. (2 Timothy 3)
24
Now I rejoice in what was suffered for you, and I fill up in my flesh what is still lacking in regard to Christ's afflictions,
for the sake of his body, which is the church. 25 I have become its servant by the commission God gave me to present
to you the word of God in its fullness- 26 the mystery that has been kept hidden for ages and generations, but
is now disclosed to the saints. 27 To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches
of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.
28 We proclaim him,
admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ. 29 To this
end I labor, struggling with all his energy, which so powerfully works in me. (Colossians 1)
19
For through the law I died to the law so that I might live for God. 20 I have been crucified with Christ and I
no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave
himself for me. 21 I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ
died for nothing!"[d] (Galatians 2)
18
I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. 19 The
creation waits in eager expectation for the sons of God to be revealed. (Romans 8)
